OFSTED
(taken from the school's Curriculum News - Summer 2009)

'Tavistock Infants is an outstanding school where pupils make an excellent start to their education.'

We are delighted to report that OFSTED have graded us as outstanding in their recent visit. This is wonderful recognition of the amazingly dedicated teamwork of all the staff here, supported so well by the governors and parents. But, of course, the stars at Tavistock are the children and we should all be proud of their hard work.

Below are a few keys comments from the report:

'Children thrive in supportive surroundings, where the school's ethos of rights, respect and responsibility underpins its work, and they flourish academically.'

'Pupils' achievement is outstanding and they make excellent progress during their time at the school.'

'Standards are rising constantly, and pupils in the current Year 1 and Year 2 cohorts have made exceptional progress from their starting points. Pupils who have learning difficulties receive excellent support so that they make similar progress to their classmates.'

'Those who have behavioural difficulties are particularly well supported in class, so that they do not disrupt others and learn well themselves.'

Space Week 13th - 17th July 2009

Astrodome
(14 July 2009)

The children all had an exciting lesson in an Astrodome today. This was one of the 'space' activities taking place in school this week to celebrate the 40th anniversary of the first moon walk. Inside the astrodome the children learnt about the earth, moon, sun and stars. They also watched some film clips of moon walks.

The New Tavistock Garden

We are delighted to say that our new garden is growing well. The children have enjoyed seeing it develop and watching the various activities. If you have not taken the chance to come and have a look please visit the garden which is outside Otter Class, after school with your child.

The gardening club has been busy all year planting, growing and looking after the various plants in the school garden. We have successfully grown broad and runner beans, carrots, potatoes and lettuces. We plan to make a soup with our vegetables during the last week of term.

We have also been successful in growing the tallest sunflower in the Church Crookham In Bloom competition for local schools. As a result of our endeavours we will be presented with a cup in the Autumn term.

Send My Friend to School Campaign

On 22nd April the children at Tavistock took part in this year's Send My Friend to School campaign organised each year by Save the Children.

This campaign is designed to put pressure on world leaders to continue to work towards getting all children across the world into primary education.

The theme this year was 'The Big Read' and emphasised the importance of reading in improving children's futures.

Children coloured in a picture of No. 10 Downing Street and posted these with messages about the importance of education to Gordon Brown.
